Central Switzerland:

He still lives here: Schiller’s freedom fighter and hero of an entire nation: Wilhelm Tell. Whether Wilhelm Tell really existed is a matter that remains under strong dispute.  It is more likely that the myth came into being somewhere in northern Europe and that the fable was only later transformed into an original Swiss epic. Mischief makers also claim that the tale described not the desire for freedom of the Swiss, but rather their obstinacy and thick-headedness…

The "Kappeli Brücke" in Lucern Kappellbrücke in Luzern

There are a whole host of sights worth seeing, waiting to be discovered around Lake Lucerne. The visitor is confronted with the evolutionary history of Switzerland with every step. Lucerne is one of the most heavily visited tourist cities in the world. The Rigi fascinated even Goethe and the transport museum is one of the best of its kind.

Lucerne and the transport museum offer fine bad weather alternatives. From the Apollo space capsule to the “Spanish Brötli” train and the planetarium, everything related to transport can be found here. A playing ground for technology freaks big and small. But you think that women will find it boring? Lucerne offers almost limitless shopping pleasures.

We have had both male and female guests awaiting bad weather most eagerly…just as an excuse to be able to take this tour.

A visit to the Rigi is almost mandatory when staying in Lucerne. This was apparently also the opinion of the Bavarian King Ludwig II, Goethe and Brahms, all of whom have signed to attest their visit in the guest book of the Hotel Rigi Kulm.

The trip with the rack and pinion railway from Rigi – Kulm is certainly a special experience. Individual routes are actually taken in the summer with the historic steam-driven train. 500 kilos of coal and 2,200 litres of water are used by one steam locomotive during this unique mountain trip.

Another mountain attraction is the Pilatus, which boasts the steepest rack and pinion railway in the world. It departs from Alpnach Staad, travels up to Pilatus Kulm and back.

Bicycle specialty

For the innocent outsider, this small romantic meadow on the banks of Lake Lucerne may seem like nothing special. But for the Swiss this is the birthplace of their country.  This is where the three farmers from Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden are said to have sworn: We wish to be a united band of brothers…rather dead than living in servitude !! At least this is how Schiller imagined the “Rütlischwur“, the oath of the Old Swiss Confederacy.

The region around Lake Lucerne through to Gotthard is brimming with stunning locations from Swiss history. This is where the visitor is made aware of the enormous importance of the region as a doorway across (and through) the Alps, connecting north and south. To this day nothing has changed, as the construction of the Neat, the longest railway tunnel in the world, proves. This gigantic construction work should come into operation in 2016. It is possible to visit the construction site!  Just ask us.
