The city Bern:
Bern was established in 1191. Even today, the old town on the curve of the Aare is home to testaments of its origins. Only in 1353, did Bern (as a canton) first become part of Switzerland and in 1848 it became the country’s capital city.
Albert Einstein worked in Bern at the patent’s office as a lowly employee and the old town is now a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. In 1954, Bern held the football World Cup and only in 1968 were women in Bern granted the right to vote! Today Bern is a modern city with around 128,000 inhabitants, in which services are the major industry. Bern has a certain tranquillity, some even say a kind of stolidity. The hectic action of other cities is unknown to the citizen of Bern and it is precisely this lack of stress combined with the fabulous old town that makes Bern such a popular city for shopping. For he who wishes to experience something of the special flair of the Swiss democracy, we would recommend a visit to the “Bundeshaus“ (the Federal Assembly Building for the Swiss government).
